Fremstad Attends 2020 Equity Leaders Institute
West Fargo, ND – (October 2, 2020) – Dr. Jennifer Fremstad, principal at West Fargo High School, attended the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center’s 2020 Equity Leaders Institute this week.
The event is for state and local administrators, K – 12 educators, school board members, and other community stakeholders from across the Center’s 13-state region. The theme for this year was “Creating Caring School Communities: Decolonizing Harmful Practices, Disrupting Push Out, and Advancing Liberation in Our Schools.”
At Equity Leaders Institute, Dr. Fremstad participated in two days of dynamic learning around (re)establishing schools as caring communities by dismantling institutionalized practices that interrupt successful schooling experiences for historically marginalized populations and supporting the development of a framework to promote success for all students. This annual event is unique in that it engages school community stakeholders leading equity efforts in their local settings from around the Center’s 13-state region and beyond in collaborative reflection and action planning toward advancing equitable school practices.
“I feel what I took away from this Institute will impact my equity work at West Fargo High School and in our West Fargo community. Now, more than ever, we have a responsibility to seek to understand and respect all people; to value diversity and see how it enriches and enhances experiences and opportunities in our schools and our community.” said Dr. Fremstad.
“At Equity Leaders Institute, education leaders come together for collegial support, idea exchange, and community,” states Director of Operations of the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center, Dr. Seena M. Skelton. “Each year this unique opportunity proves to be a transformative experience for participants.”
The Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center (MAP Center), a project of the Great Lakes Equity Center at Indiana University, is one of four federally-funded technical assistance and dissemination centers to support educators in the advancement of educational equity and civil rights in education. The MAP Center provides three tiers of technical assistance related to race, sex, national origin, and religion desegregation free of charge to PK – 12 public education agencies in a 13-state region.
